10 Vedic Math Tricks for Faster Calculation

When you need to crunch numbers quickly there are some cool methods you can use to perform calculations in just a few seconds. There are some very amazing techniques in Vedic Mathematics that will definitely help you do calculations many times faster than the traditional methods.

What is Vedic Mathematics?

Vedic Maths is the present given to us from the past by the renowned scholars of India. It is an uncontemporary form of mathematics that was rediscovered by Shri Bharti Krishna Tirthaji somewhere between the years 1911 and 1918 from the Vedas. It comprises multitudes of techniques to make solving maths more effective and efficient. Using this method, long and tiring calculations suddenly turn easy. We are able to calculate the answer with precision in a minute of time. This does not only help in solving arithmetic but also algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and applied mathematics. Vedic Maths techniques are so simple that all the cumbersome questions can be solved using mental math.

Vedic Math Tricks for Faster Calculation

There are many tricks generally known as Sutras in Vedic Mathematics to carry out calculations faster. Here are 8 useful Vedic Math tricks for faster calculation:

1. Square of a Number Ending with Five

You multiply the number that precedes the 5 by the next number higher than it and then tacks on 25 to the end of the product you get.  So, for example, to square 25, you multiply the 2 times the next higher number, 3, and get 6; append 25, and you have 625, which is the square of 25.

To square 75, you multiply the 7 times 8 and stick on 25 after the answer and you get 5625, which is indeed the square of 75.

It works for longer numbers too, such as 125.  Multiply the 12 by 13 (which is 156, since 12 dozen, a gross, is 144 and one more 12 added to that makes 156), and then stick on the 25 to get 15,625, which, yes, is the square of 125.

Or square 15,625 itself.  Of course, to do that, you usually would need a calculator to multiply the 1562 times 1563 to get 2,441,406; and then putting the 25 on the end gives you 244,140,625 which the calculator could have more readily just told you right away was the square of 15,625.

2. Multiplying a Number by Five

Most students memorize the 5 times tables very easily, but when you get into larger numbers it gets more complex – isn’t it? But don’t worry! This trick is super easy.

Take any number, then divide it by 2 (in other words, half the number). If the result is whole, add a 0 at the end. If it is not, ignore the remainder and add a 5 at the end. It works every time:

Take any number, and depending on its even or odd nature, divide the number by 2 (get half of the number).

Even Number:

2464 x 5 =?
Step 1. 2464 / 2 = 1232
Step 2. add 0
The answer will be 2464 x 5 = 12320

Odd Number:

3775 x 5
Step 1. Odd number; so ( 3775 – 1) / 2 = 1887
Step 2. As it is an odd number, so instead of 0 we will put 5
The answer will be 3775 x 5 = 18875
