What is KVPY?

The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY) is a programme launched in 1999 by the Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) to encourage students studying Basic Sciences to pursue research careers in Science. The program’s goal is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue research careers.

This programme seeks to help students realize their full potential and to cultivate the best scientific talent in the country for research and development. The selected KVPY Fellows receive generous fellowship and contingency grants up to the pre-Ph.D. level or 5 years, whichever comes first. Summer programmes for KVPY Fellows are also organized at major research and educational institutions throughout the country.

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, has been entrusted with overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Programme by the Department of Science and Technology, which has established a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) to oversee its implementation. The KVPY Program’s day-to-day operations and academic aspects are overseen by a core group.

The KVPY exam is held under three streams – SA, SX, and SB.

• SA: Students enrolled in the 11th standard will undergo this stream.
