Detailed Syllabus of Class 10 Maths ICSE

Chapter 1: Goods and Services Tax

Taxes are computed on the cost of purchase of goods or services or both, at a percentage pronounced by the government. In the earlier classes, you learned sales tax. The concept of GST is similar to that of sales tax. In this chapter of the ICSE maths syllabus for class 10, you will get a brief idea about the computation of such taxes.

  • Tax Involving Discounts
  • Profit & Loss
  • State Goods and Service Tax (SGST) and Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST)

Chapter 2: Banking

Banks are an important part of our lives. In your earlier classes, you learned about simple interest and compound interest. In this chapter, you will learn and solve problems based on determining the maturity value, rate of interest, and deposit.

  • Recurring Deposit Accounts

Chapter 3: Linear Inequations

You are familiar with linear equations – the equations involving variables in degree 1. The difference between an equation and inequation is that in the case of equations, the equal to sign is used, whereas in the case of inequations, the signs other than equal to are used like less than, less than equal to, greater than, or greater than equal to. This chapter introduces you to linear inequations in one unknown and the methods of solving such inequations. In this chapter of the ICSE maths syllabus for class 10, you will also learn the way of representing the solutions of linear inequations.

  • Linear Inequations in One Unknown
  • Solving Algebraically and Writing the Solution in Set Notation Form
  • Representation of Solution on the Number Line

Chapter 4: Quadratic Equations in One Variable

The quadratic equations in one variable are the equations of degree 2. The graph of these equations is a curve commonly known as a parabola. This chapter explains the two widely used methods to solve quadratic equations and get their zeroes. In the section on the Nature of Roots in this chapter, you will learn how to know the nature or visualize the graph of a quadratic equation without actually plotting it on graph paper.

Chapter 5: Ratio and Proportion

You have already studied ratio and proportion in earlier classes. This chapter introduces some more concepts on proportion such as continued proportion, mean proportion, and different properties associated with proportions viz., Componendo, Dividendo, Alternendo, and Invertendo.

  • Proportion
  • Continued Proportion
  • Mean Proportion
  • Componendo, Dividendo, Alternendo, Invertendo Properties

Chapter 6: Factorization of Polynomials

The concept of factors and multiples is not new to you. As all composite numbers can be written as the product of their prime factors, in the same way, the polynomials can be decomposed into a number of simpler polynomials known as their factors. This chapter explains the process of factorization of polynomials.

In this chapter of the ICSE maths syllabus for class 10, you will also learn two important theorems – The Factor Theorem and the Remainder Theorem which are used to find the factors of a polynomial.

Chapter 7: Matrices

A rectangular arrangement of numbers, arranged in rows and columns is called a matrix. This chapter on Matrices (plural of Matrix) introduces you to some of the basic terms associated with the matrices such as order, elements, types, and transpose.  You will also learn the different operations performed on matrices such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication. In this chapter, you will learn an interesting property of the multiplication of matrices and it is that the multiplication of matrices is not commutative.

  • Order of a matrix
  • Row and column matrices
  • Addition & Subtraction of Matrices
  • Multiplication of Matrices

Chapter 8: Arithmetic Progression

You must have observed that in nature, many things follow a certain pattern, such as the petals of a sunflower, the holes of a honeycomb, the grains on a maize cob, the spirals on a pineapple, and on a pine cone, etc. In Math also, the numbers also follow such patterns. Patterns of numbers are called sequences and their sum is a series. In this chapter of the ICSE maths syllabus for class 10, you will be introduced to one of the most important number patterns – the arithmetic progression.

  • General Term
  • Sum of First ‘n’ Terms

Chapter 9: Co-ordinate Geometry

Coordinate geometry is the study of geometric figures such as lines, and plane figures by plotting them in the coordinate axes. You have already used coordinate geometry to plot points and draw lines using coordinate points. In this chapter, you will learn to find the distance between two points and bisect them in some ratio. You will also read about the different forms of equations of straight lines and the conditions to check whether the lines are parallel or perpendicular lines.

  • Reflection of a Point
  • Invariant Points
  • Mid Point Formula
  • Section Formula
  • Equation of Line Slope-Intercept Form
  • Equation of Line Two Point Form
  • Conditions for Parallel & Perpendicular Lines

Chapter 10: Similar Triangles

Till now, you have studied triangles, their types, properties, and equality or congruence. In this chapter, you will learn about similarity of triangles. The terms ‘congruence’ and ‘similar’ are almost the same but there is a difference between these two terms. This chapter details these concepts with respect to triangles. You will be learning the different rules (criteria) to check whether the given triangles are similar or not.

Chapter 11: Circles

In daily life, you come across different types of circular objects such as clock dials, rings, vehicle tyres, etc. In this chapter of the ICSE maths syllabus for class 10, you will learn about the angle and chord properties of circles and one special type of quadrilateral called a cyclic quadrilateral.

Chapter 12: Mensuration

Till now, you have learned how to find the surface area and volume of 3D figures such as cubes and cuboids. This chapter of the ICSE maths syllabus for class 10, extends it further to two more solid shapes viz., cylinder and cone. In this chapter, you will learn to find the surface area and volume of cylinders and cones.

Chapter 13: Trigonometry

While learning about triangles, you studied about right triangles. These right triangles are used to find the height of mountains, tall buildings, or the depth of ocean beds. The branch of mathematics that helps in finding all these measurements is called Trigonometry. It is based on the concept of the ratio of sides of a right triangle. These three basic ratios used in trigonometry are sine, cosine, and tangent. In this chapter, you will learn the identities involving trigonometric ratios, which are commonly referred to as trigonometric identities.

  • Trigonometric Identities

Chapter 14: Heights and Distances

Knowledge of the various trigonometric ratios, their properties, and identities involving trigonometric ratios helps you to use and apply them in solving real-world problems like finding heights and distances of objects. In this chapter of the ICSE maths syllabus for class 10, you will learn how to use trigonometry to solve real-world problems.

  • Angles of Elevation and Depression
  • Heights and Distances

Chapter 15: Statistics

Statistics refers to the study of collecting, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and organizing data in a particular manner. It is a mathematical discipline where the collection and summarization of data are carried out. The data collected from the source is called raw data. The raw data is then organized for processing which is called tabulated and grouped data.

In this chapter, you will learn about the methods of finding measures of central tendencies of grouped data. The three major central tendencies that you will learn are mean, mode, and median, and also the graphical representation of data using histogram and ogive. Ogives are used to find the median graphically.

Chapter 16: Probability

Probability in math means the numerical measurement of uncertainty. This chapter introduces you to the theoretical approach to finding the probability of an event.
