The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the revised 9th class Maths syllabus for the upcoming academic session for the year 2023-24. The syllabus provides students with a strong foundation in basic mathematical concepts and skills. The topics covered in the syllabus include algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. The CBSE class 9 maths syllabus also includes a section on data interpretation and analysis. The CBSE class 9 class Maths syllabus also includes Probability, which is the study of chance events.
The Maths syllabus for class 9 is designed in such a way that it forms the foundation for the all-important board exams and competitive exams in the upcoming years. Without mastering these concepts first, you will not be able to ace those exams. For example, when it comes to Distance and Section formulae in class 10, you learn the concepts of Coordinate Geometry in class 9. This means, that if your Maths concepts are strong in class 9 itself, class 10 gets much easier!

Detailed Syllabus of Class 9 Maths CBSE
Chapter 1: Number Systems

Numbers are the building blocks of mathematics. The system or a way of writing and representing numbers is called the number system. Till now you have studied natural numbers, whole numbers, and integers. This chapter introduces you to rational numbers – the numbers written in the form $\frac{p}{q}$ and irrational numbers – the numbers that cannot be represented in the form $\frac{p}{q}$.
In this first chapter of the CBSE class 9 maths syllabus you will also learn about the decimal expansion of rational numbers that are of two types – terminating and non-termination but recurring and the decimal expansion of irrational numbers that are non-terminating and non-recurring.

- Multiplication of Real Numbers
- Division of Real Numbers
- Rationalizing the Denominator
- Laws of Exponents for Real Numbers
Chapter 2: Polynomials

You have studied algebraic expressions and their operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Polynomials are algebraic expressions consisting of one or more terms combined together by mathematical operators – +, -, *, and /.
You will learn about different types of polynomials such as monomials, binomials, trinomials, and also linear, quadratic, and cubic polynomials, and the relationship between coefficients of a polynomial and its zeroes.

Chapter 3: Coordinate Geometry

You have used number lines to represent different types of numbers such as natural numbers, whole numbers, and integers, and know how to locate a point on a number line. In Coordinate geometry, you will learn how to represent a point on a two-dimensional plane – the Cartesian system.
- Cartesian System
Chapter 4: Linear Equations in Two Variables

In earlier classes, you learned linear equations in one variable – their form and solutions. Linear equations in two variables are the equations having two variables both having power 1. In this chapter of the CBSE class 9 maths syllabus, you will learn about the general form of linear equations in two variables and their graphs.
- What is Linear Equation in Two Variable?

- Equation of Lines Parallel to x-Axis and y-Axis
Chapter 5: Introduction to Euclidean Geometry

In this chapter, you will learn about the basic postulates and axioms of geometry from the book ‘Elements’ compiled by Euclid a Greek mathematician around 300 B.C.E. These postulates and axioms are the building blocks of modern geometry which have wide applications in the fields of art, construction and architecture.
- Definition, Axiom & Postulate
- Euclid’s Axioms & Postulates
Chapter 6: Lines and Angles

In daily life, you see different types of angles formed by the edges of the objects. In lines and angles, you will learn about two types of pairs of lines – intersecting lines and parallel lines and angles formed by these angles such as complementary angles, supplementary angles, vertically opposite angles, corresponding angles, and linear pairs.
- Intersecting and Non-Intersecting Lines
- Linear Pair
- Parallel Lines and a Transversal
- Angle Sum Property of a Triangle
Chapter 7: Triangles

You have studied triangles and their different properties in earlier classes. This chapter introduces you to the concept of equality of triangles – congruency. You will learn the meaning of corresponding sides and corresponding angles and the four criteria for two triangles to be congruent – SSS, SAS, ASA, and RHS.
Chapter 8: Quadrilaterals

You know about different types of quadrilaterals such as square, rectangle, rhombus, kite, and trapezium. In this chapter of CBSE class 9 maths syllabus, you learn more about special types of quadrilaterals with two pairs of parallel and equal sides known as parallelograms, their properties, and also special types of parallelograms – rectangle, square, and rhombus.
- Angle Sum Property of a Quadrilateral
- Types of Quadrilaterals
- Properties of a Parallelogram
- Mid-Point Theorem
Chapter 10: Circles

In daily life, you come across different types of circular objects such as clock dials, rings, vehicle tyres, etc. In this chapter, you will learn terms related to circles such as chords, arcs, sectors, segments, and their different properties.
- What is a Circle?
- Angle Subtended by a Chord at a Point on a Circle
- Chord and Radius in a Circle
- Equal Chords in a Circle
- Angle Subtended by an Arc in a Circle
- Cyclic Quadrilaterals
Chapter 12: Heron’s Formula

Chapter 13: Surface Area and Volume

Till now, you have learned how to find the perimeter and area of figures that can be drawn on paper, i.e 2D figures. This chapter of the CBSE class 9 maths syllabus introduces you to 3D figures commonly known as solid objects and the concept of surface area and volume and how to find the surface area and volume of some basic 3D objects such as cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones, and spheres.
